Friday 40th Anniversary G' Wow, that's nice! Is that a burnt orange colour? It is. Casio refers to it as flame, but burnt-orange is a better description. Thanks

I went out a 7 pm expecting to see Venus setting in the West, but it wasn't here. A thin crescent Moon was rather pretty, but no Venus. About 930 pm the girlfriend remarked that the Venus had been occulted by the Moon, probably seeing some post on Instagram. So the occultation and being informed of it by someone who is notably indifferent to the sky were both improbable. The idea of giving a watch to the village headman here came out of nowhere, and in a couple minutes the Croton here seemed like a good choice. I got it about 15 years ago for $60 new and it is still basically unworn. I thought it might be Swiss but looking at the back it says Japan movement. The headman here is a nice gent who was in the Thai Army and shows up to attest for Immigration that I live in the house that I live in on their annual visit. Really appreciate your insights into ex-Pat living there Kent. Always fascinating and I'm sure your scored some points

It is always fun to meet up with expat here and compare experiences. The response is usually "been there done that" or "yeah, I know." Such as the inability of Thais to say an English word ending in s. Or the routine fact that you have to repeat a question three times to get an answer from a Thai, the three times rule. Or the mish mash of yes and no. Do you have any x? Yes. Yes what. Yes we're out of that.
Other than that the Thais have an actual nation. I respect the Thai monarchy a great deal. The King serves an important role to keep the state from driving off into a ditch. Which I am confident that it would do without someone keeping a watch on them. Rama 9's key concepts were "sufficiency" and incrementalism. I recall one time some folks wanted to gift him with a white elephant. Between the naming ceremony and security and a couple hundred monks, the cost to receive the elephant was about a million dollars. He informed the gift folks that he had enough white elephants already, which was probably a dozen or more.
The Croton is a solid watch for the price.

Always fascinating and I'm sure your scored some points I miss those days when, on my way back from Saigon, I would spend a long weekend at the ShangriLa and daily trips to the Paragon Mall to shop watches. I bought my Cartier Yearling Chronograph there. I've eaten enough boat noodle soup to kill a normal person :-)
