I tried to use the IR converted Nikon D80 on Friday, and there is an error message on it. I tried the DIY fixes, no luck. I have looked at a couple of youtube videos showing how to repair it. They say it is a brush contact for the aperture control. It takes a total teardown of the camera body to reach it. I won't attempt it. It's 13 years old. To get back to infrared photography I think it will now be cheaper to buy a camera already converted.

Oh, my- that is a very bad turn of events. I hope you do find a new camera body with the features you need, but I realize that they can be quite pricey...

Truth be told, I was really trying to re-purpose a beat up and cosmetically crusty DSLR body to give it a new life with IR work. I do still have my even older Nikon Coolpix 995 that was IR-converted years earlier, but there is a list of reasons why I wanted to move to the D80 body for infrared work. Speed, megapixels, photo format, etc.

I was wondering if it was possible to get a used D80 or D90 already converted. Should be relatively low cost. Not familiar with the Nikon system . . . but AFAIK you should be able to use all the lenses you put on the D80.

It served you well, Chris. Maybe you could find someone to fix it for you, for less than a replacement.

Not familiar with the Nikon system . . . but AFAIK you should be able to use all the lenses you put on the D80. It is. Best value buying direct from another individual. Go to LifePixel, and they will basically sell you a body for the going price and charge another $275 for the conversion service.
So there I could buy a D7000 body (which I already do own a D7000 for 8 years) for $299 + $275 for a 720nm IR conversion. Then I have a common battery and accessory ecosystem.
Or option B, D7000 body with a full-spectrum modification. The filter sensor is replaced with clear glass. UV and IR are not filtered out. This gives an advantage for astrophotography and options for adding light-pollution filters to the lens without much drop in exposure. Infrared photos can be taken by adding a standard 720nm screw-on lens filter. This however will make composing with the optical viewfinder pretty difficult.

It is 10 months later and I have purchased a used D600 already converted to 720nm infrared. I really researched many angles to replace the D80, and this full-frame D600 body showed up at KEH camera online last week. At $591, it was considerably cheaper than buying a used but nice body and sending it to a reputable conversion service. Arrived 2 days ago, but weather was not favorable then. These photos taken at a disabled-accessible county park in Madison, WI during my lunch.

I thought it was new, because you said you were waiting for a camera. I'm glad it works and you've resolved your issues. I love the summer snow pictures you can take!
