Turtle Creek near Clinton, WI during lunch. That last photo contains a genuine archeological artifact. I bet it has been there 45-50 years. That dragonfly picture is fantastic! I remember the campgrounds we stayed at when I was a kid were littered with those pull tabs.

Just some odd additions. I tried 2 more times at the VFW post for a red or orange sunset, and the hidden clouds behind the smoke thwarted me some more. Believe me, I cranked up the color all I could in post without making a cartoon of the image. Did another practice on the sun with the solar filters. I tried out 3 camera bodies, 2 lenses, and a commercial vs homemade solar filter. Nikon Z5 with my good Sigma 150-600mm lens and the commercial ND solar filter. Then exchanged out the Nikon Z5 for a D600 infrared-conversion camera body, all else the same. Sunspots are not so dark in infrared it seems. Nikon D750 with Nikkor 500mm reflector lens from the 1970s. Can only shoot f/8 with this one. It is not nearly as sharp, and I had to make a homemade solar filter to fit the lens. It's cut from some solar film (the kind they make the cheap eclipse glasses with) and the rest is cardboard and duct tape.

Great pics! Birds of prey are awesome. My aunt the birder says it's a red-tailed hawk. It certainly is. His name is now Henry. This was maybe 2 miles away from where I photographed an urban hawk last year, and I think it is the same bird. Check the 2022 photo thread. OK, last year's bird had a mostly white head. Unless it matured to a brown feathered head it's a different bird. Henry the chicken hawk!

September 23 in my front porch. Woodpecker climbed through a gap in a window. Took some effort to get dummy to leave. He could not figure out how an open door worked.

Another image of the Sun. The plot twist here is I used the infrared converted D600 and combined over 150 images to bring out surface detail.

Was driving all over the countryside looking for the right fall color photo as I worked 10-24-2023. It is hard to compose photos of fall color. Just showing a hillside with a hundred trees in bright colors will fall flat if there is no focal point. So today I am using a 15mm ultra-wide lens and getting up-close and personal with the trees. You can stand 25 feet away from a tree with this lens and still frame the whole thing in the photo.

I have created my 2024 calendar and it's available for sale. The photos are mostly picked from the ones in this thread and I add captions.

Andromeda Galaxy and possibly the last entry for the year. Unless I see a snowy owl or something.
