It's been a while since I last visited this place which is about a 45 minute drive south of Calgary. Some of you may recall a previous post I made but just in case...So it was a lovely day and off I went. Just a little backgrounder. I grew up as an Airforce brat so my fascination with warbirds and other fighter planes is kinda ingrained. This museum is dedicated to all the Canadian servicemen and servicewomen who served in Bomber Command. My Uncle Larry who I never got to know, perished in a crash in July 1944 while piloting a Wellington bomber on a training mission. His name is on the memorial.
One new addition to the museum is this version of an ME-109 which flew with the Spanish Air Force post WWII. It was built at the Hispano factory and was fitted with a British Merlin engine.
I also noted some exhibits referring to an exercise dubbed Operation Manna whereby food and supplies were parachuted from Lancaster bombers over the Netherlands, so naturally Johan I thought of you!
,,,,and finally some actual watch content. This is a Rolex that belonged to an airman who perished when his Lancaster crashed near the small village of Lathum in the Netherlands. It's quite the story and no doubt the airman's family were thrilled to have it back as a memento. Looking at the watch, it's not dissimilar too one of your pieces eh Marcel?
Now including a picture of this watch may be controversial but remember this place is primarily a war museum after all. I was surprised to see it and even more surprising was the it was for sale for $500!
